Least expensive country for a American to retire,?

Income will consist of Soc. Sec. and small pension.

Somalia, Nigeria… there’s a raft of countries that are dirt cheap. They just dont have any facilities or other things you are used to.

You get what you pay for.

Almost any sub-Saharan country, or southeast Asia would be cheap. A Central American country?

Italy is not cheap - I live and work here and the cost of my small one bedroom apartment is roughly the same as my 4 bedroom home in Colorado. You would also have to file tax returns in both the US and Italy. You might try Costa Rica though - there’s a thriving ex pat community there.

You should check out Thailand. Rents seem to be around $400. or so a month there and food should be reasonable.
My son’s friend went for a long visit and said he spent around $100. a month for food cooked at home. There are many western Europeans and Americans living there.
My husband and I are heading out to Hungary on ss only but he is from there and we already own a flat in the city.
Parts of Asia have many American communities, you should read up on them and see if any would suit you. best to go for a long visit to any country before you move for good, it takes a few months to see the real picture once you get somewhere.
